STOP CHRASHING

Part 1

Introduction

It is very important to reduce the number of gliding accidents and to meet the future with new measures of safety improvements. Most gliding organisations in the World has fully accepted the weight of a training or safety program, and the crucial human factor.

This paper originates from the Swedish Soaring Federation (SSF). It is a manual containing some ideas of safety work with a special focus on the interaction of pilots and the communication of certain values at the clubs.  The idea behind— safety work begins in the club — have no obligatory connection with national patterns, the idea is rather quite useful to adapt to any gliding environment.

We have used the manual and transparencies at successfully completed seminars at all gliding clubs in Sweden. It is also through club seminars the intentions work most efficiently. The leader who will chair, has been preparing the discussion carefully, ordered the transparencies and read the text in this manual several times. A good preparation serves the idea of an open minded discussion with the members of the gliding club. The social atmosphere is an important part of the play, and the participators, the members of the club, must contribute to the outcome of the seminar.

The seminars have been a great success. The reason is the unusual approach —discussions instead of lecturing — but also the typical club profile. Ordinary club life  represent the social melting-pot, at the same time the origins of attitudes and judgement. Here is the laboratory where ideas are evaluated, accepted, neglected, or vanished, and accidents performed. That is why we focus on the club.
